2026 - Active Learning for Writing Across Disciplines

A 15-Hour Asynchronous Professional Learning Experience

Writing is how students show what they know—but for multilingual learners, writing expectations often remain unclear and unsupported.

Writing Across Disciplines helps educators design writing instruction that makes disciplinary expectations visible, explicit, and accessible across content areas. This course supports teachers in moving beyond generic writing strategies to intentional, language-rich writing instruction aligned to real classroom tasks.

What Educators Will Learn

Participants will:

  • Understand how writing expectations differ across disciplines

  • Identify the language demands of writing tasks in content areas

  • Design instruction that supports multilingual learners through the writing process

  • Use functional language planning to strengthen student writing

  • Provide feedback that supports clarity, cohesion, and meaning

Why Writing Across Disciplines Matters

Students are expected to write in every subject—but are rarely taught how writing works in science, social studies, math, and ELA.

This course helps educators:
✔ Make disciplinary writing expectations explicit
✔ Support multilingual learners without lowering rigor
✔ Improve student clarity, organization, and academic language
✔ Align writing instruction to real classroom tasks
