In 2021, the number of refugees and asylum seekers in the US have continued to increase. How can English Language Learner (ELL) Programs respond, and provide appropriate support for Newcomers and SLIFE?
Developing ELL programming for middle and high school Newcomers and SLIFE can be challenging for district teams, as these students don’t always fit into a districts’ existing instructional and intervention frameworks. Yet, the value these students bring to American society is so rich, that it is important to be sure we have programming that is designed to unlock their potential.
In this session Kelly Reider and Kris Jagasia will explore:
- The opportunity: identifying the value that Newcomers bring to the US from both cultural and entrepreneurial perspectives
- The roles that Newcomers play during the initial years in America and the influence that language plays
- How middle and high school Newcomers’ goals may be different to traditional ELL populations and what that means for curriculum and instructional strategies
- How to develop content that is appropriate for the goals of Newcomers
- Thinking beyond high school: preparing students for job readiness, entrepreneurship, and other critical life skills
- Strategies to address the administration challenges of fluctuating student enrollments from both a student and staffing perspective.
