Long-Term English Learners are students that have been in an English Speaking School for Six or More Years. This pathway focuses on strategies and supports that build on the assets and abilities of these multilingual learners to develop reading, writing, and oracy skills.

COURSE 1
Developing Reading for Long Term English Learners
Long Term English Learners (LTELs) make up an increasing percentage of all secondary English Learners in the United States. This first course in the LTEL pathway will provide reading strategies designed to lift LTELs into higher levels of language proficiency and help them access complex, grade level texts. The course is for teachers who work with intermediate level language learners in Grades 4-12.

Developing Writing for Long Term English Learners
Long Term English Learners (LTELs) make up an increasing percentage of all secondary English Learners in the United States. This second course in the LTEL pathway provides writing strategies designed to lift LTELs into higher levels of language proficiency and help them write complex, grade level texts for multiple purposes across the curriculum. The course is for all content area teachers who work with intermediate level language learners in Grades 4-12.

- Plan lessons with a focus on developing writing across the curriculum;
- Implement strategies that develop academic writing across the curriculum;
- Develop students' metalinguistic awareness and ability to edit their own writing; and
- Analyze and assess student writing to determine next steps in instruction.

About the Instructor
Beth Skelton
Beth has 30 years of experience as a language educator. She has worked with early childhood, elementary, middle, high school and adult language learners in rural, urban, suburban, and international school settings. She has published materials for teaching adult English Learners with the TPRS method entitled Putting it Together. Beth holds a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Teacher Education and certification in German and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education.
